At KOTT’s Cobourg manufacturing plant, we literally help put roofs over people’s heads. Leading home building companies buy the roof trusses we manufacture in Cobourg for their new home construction projects in the GTA and Ottawa. Our manufacturing focus is on being efficient and delivering ‘on time, in full’. Our Cobourg facility uses the latest in truss manufacturing technology to automate set-ups and achieve optimal output with our team of about 40 employees. Occupational Health & Safety is hugely important at all of our workplaces.

We love our swag! Two times a year (Spring and Fall), we open the online KOTT Store. Employees can buy high quality branded merchandise for themselves and their families at great prices – KOTT pays half, and the employee pays half through payroll deduction. The merchandise changes up every time, but always includes a great selection of shirts, hoodies, sweaters, jackets and hats, as well as hi vis items that employees can wear at work.
b) What is your company’s guilty pleasure?
Games and contests… Each year our largest events are a Safety BBQ in June, a Family Picnic in September, and employee and family Christmas events in December. During the pandemic, we managed to find ways to safely modify our events vs. cancel them outright, and even added a new one: WinterBREAK in February. A mainstay of KOTT events are games and contests – we work hard, but we like to play hard too! We’ve tried life-sized Jenga, flip cup, axe throwing, head-to-head trivia contests, KOTT-themed BINGO and family photo contests.

Rusco Manufacturing is a privately owned Company situated in Cobourg Ontario and owned by a local resident. Rusco began manufacturing steel windows and storm doors in 1937 in Toronto Ontario. Rusco supplies windows and doors to the residential market and to the Public Housing sector in the U.S. There are storm doors now being replaced that have been in use for more than 40 years. In keeping with the time Rusco began manufacturing vinyl windows, steel entrance doors and of course continued to supply steel storm doors and screen doors to the residential and public housing markets in both Canada and the US.

a) Tell us something about your business that no one knows.
During the blockage of the Suez canal by the grounded ship ‘Ever Given’ in 2021, it was an ESCO cutter head that was used to dredge around the ship’s prow that was wedged against the canal banks. ESCO to the rescue!
b) If your company wrote an autobiography, what would the title be?
You’re Never Too Old to Change – This division started as a company in 1913, this facility started up in 1963 and it has constantly been actively trying to improve itself since it’s inception. Whether it is safety, throughput, process capability, or any other company trait, we have regularly strived to find “the better way.
c) What has been the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Whether it’s answering an email, addressing a colleague or doing any task in our daily work, NEVER RESPOND WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY! Always take a breathe, wait 15 minutes and then respond from your rational mind to whatever the situation is that represented a provocation or rapid heartbeat moment. Also true for personal relationships away from work.
